Born and raised in the inland San Diego area, and now living on the central coast of California in an only recently discovered Paradise. Coming from an artistic family background, where my grandmother, and both parents were hobby sculptors and painters. Our home contained a very extensive library of art related books, and I began perusing books full of prints of all of the great paintings of the world at the age of about four or five.
I have chosen to paint with acrylic paints on stretched canvas. Canvas because it has a give to it that board does not have, and acrylics because of their fast drying time and resistance to fading overtime. I favor a style including flat planes, hard outlines, and the use of deep vivid colors. All of my paintings contain either a symbolic or narrative content.
When I was 5 years old, I saw a print of a painting in one of those books that set the rest of my life in motion. The visceral reaction to the first glance of that painting was akin to being struck by lightning. I decided then at that tender age that I would become a painter. I began to teach myself to draw and then, later , to paint. I
When I was 5 years old, I saw a print of a painting in one of those books that set the rest of my life in motion. The visceral reaction to the first glance of that painting was akin to being struck by lightning. I decided then at that tender age that I would become a painter. I began to teach myself to draw and then, later , to paint. I was very inspired and most heavily influenced by two styles of painting. First, I was attracted to the monumental Grace of the single solitary Central female figure in a painting, and the emotional force it could produce to impact the viewer. For these influences, think of Botticelli's "Birth of Venus", "Madame X", by John Singer Sargent, and the Japanese Ukiyo-e prints by Eeishi. The second strong influences for me were the great Renaissance/Baroque Masters:. Leonardo, Vermeer, and Caravaggio. The attraction to this style was its mastery of light, shadows, and realism. To one extent or another these influences can be observed in all of my paintings.
